THE BEETHOVEN TRILOGY: PART TWO

Gryphon Trio [ANELEKTA 2 9858]

Gryphon Trio - Beethoven Trilogy Part 2 CD Cover
Canada’s pre-eminent ensemble, the Gryphon Trio, continues their survey of the great chamber music of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Performing two masterpieces for violin, cello, and piano, the Trio releases their second CD in a three part exploration of the great composers work.

Written in 1794, the Op. 1 piano trios demonstrate Beethoven’s complete assimilation of the Classical style and his personal innovations to the musical form. On this CD, Op.1 No.2 displays Beethoven’s ability to reinvent the piano trio structure, while still incorporating the influences of Haydn and Mozart. The “Archduke” trio, considered Beethoven’s masterpiece of the genre, was conceived at the end of the decade when the composer’s artistry blossomed into its full maturity.

LATEST RELEASE – CHUNG RECORDS RARE SAINT-SAËNS PIANO TRANSCRIPTIONS
February 26, 2010

“Her technique is impeccable, as is her sense of phrasing. And I'm in awe of how she manages to make the concerto work with two small hands.”

- TORONTO STAR
(John Terauds, Feb 23, 2010 review of Saint-Saëns Piano Transcriptions recording)

Lucille Chung - Camille Saint-Saens CD
One of the most exciting young pianists of her generation, Lucille Chung offers a spectacular selection of Camille Saint-Saëns Piano Transcriptions for her first XXI-21 recording.

Chung unearths 6 rare compositions by Saint-Saëns spanning a period of 30 years, including works originally conceived for piano with orchestra such as the Concerto no. 2 transcribed by Georges Bizet for solo piano, “Wedding-Cake” and exotic “Africa” in Saint-Saëns’ own finger-twisting solo version. Chung has also chosen Saint-Saëns’ transcriptions of Bacchanale from Samson et Dalila, the Bourrée from Bach’s Violin Partita no. 1 and Romance sans paroles, to conclude a masterful and exhilarating program.

The album has already been chosen as Discovery CD of the Month in Scena Musicale November 2009.
Universal Canada released the album on February 9, 2010. (Disques XXI CD2-1682)

LATEST RELEASE – JANE COOP RELEASES “A CENTURY OF PIANO CLASSICS”
February 26, 2010

Jane Coop - A Century of Piano Classics CD
This new collection of core repertoire by one of Canada’s favourite pianists, spans the period from the 1790’s to the 1890’s. Beginning with an early Beethoven Sonata, and ending with the final four piano pieces of Brahms, the centerpiece is the popular fourth Scherzo by Chopin. Coop’s previous Romantic Piano collections (Volumes 1 and 2) were best-sellers in the CBC Records catalogue… and now the Vancouver artist has added to these collections of short pieces some more substantial masterworks. It is, in effect, a recital of some of her most cherished music for piano.

Jane Coop continues to dazzle audiences around the world, from Oslo to Shanghai, from Berlin to Tofino. As the Montreal Gazette remarked “ Coop has that extra something that lets a pianist become a poet”. (Skylark SKY0901)
