BIOGRAPHY
"Synchronicity" is used to describe an intuitive, almost inexplicable co-ordination in timing between people. It could surely be used to describe the outstanding duo piano artistry of James Anagnoson and Leslie Kinton. Rich in history, Anagnoson & Kinton are entering a remarkable fourth decade of performances. And like the finer things in life, their reputation and legacy grow richer each year.
Enchanting audiences throughout Canada, United States, Europe, and China, In 2008, Anagnoson & Kinton expanded their presence into Russia where they performed in St. Petersburg's Glazunov Hall. With many performances scheduled throughout the 2011.12 season, upcoming highlights include a recital presented by Music Worcester in Massachusetts and three performances presented by Music in the Morning Concerts in Vancouver.
Anagnoson & Kinton continue to push toward new artistic horizons. In addition to performing with the major orchestras in Canada, they have expanded in innovative musical directions. They have performed Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring alongside Ballet BC and in concert with a video of dance set by modern choreographer, Pina Bausch. Summer 2006 saw them in a multi-genre premiere titled Into the Labyrinth by Canadian composer Ray Luedeke. This work featured staging by Tom Diamond and actor Colin Fox. As chamber musicians, last season saw the duo perform Bartok’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion with Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) Principal Timpanist David Kent and TSO Principal Percussionist John Rudolph. In addition, they performed the Brahms’ Requiem in collaboration with the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir.
Since 1981, the duo has built a discography of nine titles. In 2006, a special compilation CD titled Stages was released, celebrating their milestone 30th season and was launched to great acclaim.
As both performers and scholars, Anagnoson & Kinton hold distinguished places in academic circles. James Anagnoson is the Dean of The Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School. He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music and received his Master of Music from The Juilliard School. Leslie Kinton is on the faculties at both the University of Western Ontario and The Glenn Gould School. Both his Master of Music and Ph.D. in music theory are from the University of Toronto.
Anagnoson & Kinton, like most outstanding ensembles, are actually greater than the sum of their parts. Or to quote Richard Dyer in The Boston Globe, “As individuals, they seem to have no technical shortcomings at all; in tandem, they are more than twice as good." And getting better.
Anagnoson & Kinton are Yamaha Artists.
